Woodfield Dog Rescue Newsletter Autumn 2019

Welcome, everyone, to the Autumn addition of our Woodfield Dog Rescue Newsletter.
In this issue: Janet’s Battersea adventure, Mildred’s Mission, dogs that have been adopted, future events and so much more!

Mildred’s Mission
Mildred was a little old lady that we met back during our May visit. She was in the courtyard when we came across her and even though she was fearful of humans, Nat and Mada managed to get her to safety.
It was obvious she was an older lady, and had endured a hard life on the streets. We were hopeful that she would make a full recovery and that she could live out her days here at Woodfield. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be, a life on the streets had taken it’s toll on her; her leg was in a bad way from an injury that hadn’t healed properly, she was riddled with heart worm, a nasty tick borne disease and several other fatal ailments.
The kindest thing to do was put her to sleep.
She only got weeks of love. In her long life she only got 5 weeks! 5 weeks, that is NOT enough!
No dog should have to experience love for only 5 weeks of their life!
We vowed at Woodfield to do all we could to reduce the number of dogs this would happen to!
So that is why we have started Mildred’s Mission.
Mildred’s Mission is a spay campaign and we want it to be a MASSIVE campaign.
The only way we can stop this is through spaying and neutering, which will reduce the number of stray dogs that have to suffer, unloved, abused, having to search for food, watching their back for the dog catchers, fighting just to survive.
No dog should have to suffer like Mildred did. No dog should only know love for 35 days.

Who has been re-homed recently?

A lot has happened since the last newsletter; we have re-homed 16 dogs in total!
Freya, Duchess, Braveheart, Lucy Lou, Imogen, Autumn, Cora, Lady Vivienne, Lord Montagu, Samson, Sally Bear, Hilda, Eleanor, Foxy, Bella and Betsy!

It is amazing to see so many dogs find the happy ending they deserve.
Without your support, this wouldn’t be possible.

Next dogs arriving at Woodfield Dog Rescue

In early March we will be welcoming 5 beautiful souls to our little kennel from Boldesti Public Shelter. Their stories are below. If you would like more information on a particular dog with a view to adoption, please email thewoodfieldfoundation@gmail.com or call Janet on 07899991967.

Felicity
A striking little lady who is approximately 1 year old. She is extra small so we have nicknamed her the teacup dog. We will be checking pockets when you leave!

Hetty

A young girl approximately 4 months old, the baby of the group!
Isn’t she beautiful, she is going to be a small bundle of joy for sure!

Snowy

Roughly around 2 years old, Snowy is a small/medium sized handsome boy!
Arrival day can’t come soon enough!

Mimi

Isn’t she just adorable? Like butter wouldn’t melt!
She is around 7 months and is a small sized dog.
We can’t wait to meet her.

Eric

The biggest out of the newbies, he is just stunning!
He is a large dog around 2 years old.
We are on the edge of our seats to meet him!

Julia

Sweet Julia around 1 year old!
Another small delicious dog, who can’t come soon enough!

There is so much work that goes into caring for the dogs that are in The Boldesti Shelter, from ensuring they have enough food, keeping on top of what stages the different dogs are at within the shelter, making sure that sick dogs get the right treatment and encouraging the local community to get their dogs spayed and neutered.
It is a never ending job that is both mentally and physically draining.
And we are forever grateful to Mada and Dennis for their constant determination to get Boldesti’s dogs to a safer place!

What have we been up to?

2019 has been a busy year for us at Woodfield!
In April, Michelle Hennon organised the Dance Your Pants Off Afternoon Tea which raised an amazing £2710.
In May, we made a trip to the shelter in Boldesti, and although Janet had been a few times before it was the first time for Nat (Trustee) and Olivia. It is so important for us to show you all what life at the shelter is really like and how your donations are used.
It was a life changing trip for Nat and Olivia and was full of highs and lows. Both Nat and Olivia fell in love with two particular dogs whilst on our visit, Cora and Hilda respectively, who they have now adopted! (You can follow their stories on our Facebook group)
Whilst there, we held a spay clinic which was a huge success – a total of 20 dogs and 6 cats were spayed/neutered. This will go a long way in helping reduce the stray dogs and cats in Boldesti! Thank you again to everyone that donated to make that possible.
We are always looking at ways we can spread Woodfield’s name and raise some money, and this year have attended different events AND there have been various fundraisers going on!
In June the Woodfield Warriors completed the 6k Total Warrior challenge that consisted of tough obstacles and mud (lots and lots of mud!). We raised a whopping total of £3705.34! A massive well done to the warriors and to everyone who donated!
Also in June, Michelle organised another fantastic event, the Motown night!! This was so much fun and we are so grateful to Michelle and all her helpers for putting on this event for us and Blue Cross Thirsk. The total raised after costs was phenomenal and we received just over £2000.
Back in July we attended the Hope Pastures Fun Dog Show and Fete which was a successful trip for the Woodfield team and the ambassadogs. It was lovely to see some of our adopters bring their dogs along and enter some of the classes. Lula, Cora and Frank entered too and even managed to win some rosettes!
More recently we attended the Doggy Pop Up Cakery event in Harrogate that was brilliant in raising not only awareness but some funds too!.

Drainage

With the help of The Woodfield Foundation, the Boldesti Public Shelter now has a new drainage system!
This sounds pretty boring doesn’t it? But the new drainage system is so important in ensuring that the kennels can be washed down and that the kennel waste is actually removed instead of sitting in gravel gullies outside the kennels.
Having a proper drainage system reduces the number of flies around the kennels, which at this time of year can be terrible. This in turn reduces the spread of diseases between unvaccinated courtyard dogs and the other dogs part way through their process, and of course the vulnerable puppies.
Thank you to everyone that has donated to make this possible. This is just another step in increasing the welfare for the dogs that find themselves at the Boldesti Public Shelter.

David Smith Art work

Earlier this year our wonderful volunteer Alison (a.k.a The Cake Lady of Harrogate – check her out here https://www.thecakeladyharrogate.co.uk/) and her family arranged for David Smith, the incredibly talented (and just a wee bit famous 😳 check him out!!) illustrator to produce some bespoke artwork for Woodfield Dog Rescue.

The artwork presented to Janet was a canvas which she is still deciding where to hang, and an incredible show banner which we used on our stall at Hope Pastures.

It is absolutely stunning and we are delighted to announce that we have this art work available for you to purchase as a wonderful car sticker so you can show the world that you’re a part of the Woodfield family!!

With 100% of proceeds from these gorgeous car stickers coming direct to our charity, every purchase will help us continue our life saving work with the dogs of the Boldesti Public Shelter in Romania 💖🐾

These car stickers are 10 X 10cm super gloss white non-fade static cling, which means that should you want to remove them from your car window (you won’t, they’re gorgeous) all you have to do is peel them off. No sticky mess, no ruined nails. And they don’t damage the glass 😀 For best results leaving no air bubbles, clean window with glass cleaner and leave slightly damp before applying.

Price only £5 inc P&P

marked “car”. Please include your address in the notes section of your payment and be aware that PayPal can sometimes charge us so check which option is ticked 😉

Battersea Academy

Here at Woodfield we are always striving to improve our knowledge surrounding dog rescue, and this year Janet went to the Battersea Academy. She learnt so many new things, some of which have been introduced at Woodfield from sound therapy to different types of enrichment. It was encouraging that most of the suggestions that were made were already being implemented at Woodfield – big tick for Janet there! And some of the things discussed weren’t relevant for the size of our mini shelter but interesting to learn about nonetheless.
We are so proud of Janet for completing this academy.

OUR APPEALS

This year has been amazing for appeals.
When our last newsletter came out we were still running the Valentine’s appeal. Well we exceeded all expectations and raised £1,000 to help with the medical fees at the Boldesti Public Shelter.
It was so heartwarming to see that our next appeal, the Easter campaign, raised a whopping £2800 which helped us fund our spay campaign in May in which 19 dogs and 6 cats were spayed and the remaining funds were ring fenced for another spay campaign. This goes a long way to getting to the root cause of the stray dog situation.
Our most recent campaign, the puppy appeal to help feed the 100+ puppies that are currently in the Boldesti Public Shelter, raised a staggering £1,670!!!!! Just incredible.

Without your continued support for these appeals we wouldn’t be able to help the amount of dogs we do. So thank you from everyone here at Woodfield HQ and back in Boldesti!
